Your first Sunday

Come as you are

Our building is simple: a roof, louvred walls, a concrete floor and overhead fans. People come in meri blaus and in office clothes. Wear what is comfortable for you.

The service runs about ninety minutes. The worship band leads the singing — contemporary songs, older hymns, and a chorus in Tok Pisin. Then a sermon from the Bible, applied to life in this city. Children go out to their own programme partway through.

Join in as much or as little as you like. If you would like someone to talk to, any of the welcomers at the door will be glad to help.

    The Roots of Injustice

Genesis 1–11 · Series: Biblical Justice and Social Concern

Where does injustice begin? In part two of our series Biblical Justice and Social Concern, Pastor Duli Asi takes us back to the book of origins, Genesis 1–11, to see what God intended and where things went wrong.

God made humanity in His image and gave away power, so that we could rule, create and care for His creation. Poverty and hunger are not God’s design. The earth He made can feed everyone. The problem is how we use the power He gave us. From the Fall, to Cain and Abel, to the violence before the Flood, to Nimrod and the Tower of Babel, Pastor Duli traces how delegated power was turned to self-service: pulling everything inward, holding on at all costs, while the weak and the voiceless pay the price. Alongside Genesis, the prophet Amos warns the comfortable and complacent who feel secure while their people suffer.

But there is another path. Noah chose to trust and obey God when everyone around him mocked. Godly power gives: it enables, empowers and sets others free. For Papua New Guinea today, that means asking hard questions about food security, land, climate, skills, and whether we are giving power away or holding on to it.

“God gave away power. He didn’t keep it for himself.”

    Reflect this week

    • Where has God given you power: at home, at work, at school, in church, in your community?
    • Are you using that power to lift others up, or holding on to it?
    • What is one thing you can do this week to enable or empower someone around you, especially through skills and opportunity?

    Key scriptures: Genesis 1–11 · Amos 6:1–6 · Psalm 67 · Psalm 133 · 1 Timothy 6:6 · 2 Corinthians 11:3 · 1 Timothy 2:13–14 · Genesis 4:9–11 · Genesis 6:9–22 · Joshua 24:15 · Genesis 9:1–17 · Genesis 10:8–12 · Genesis 11:1–9 · John 20:19 · Isaiah 40:31
